Y de pronto un día los espectadores se convirtieron en actores, los actores en actrices las actrices en protagonistas los protagonistas en historias y las historias invadieron las plazas.
De pronto un día la memoria se hizo cuerpos, los fantasmas granos, los recuerdos estallaron y el tiempo comenzó a andar.
De pronto un día el teatro abandonó la sala, nuestros ojos se volvieron oídos, mirar se transformó en escuchar, y escuchar en tocar. De pronto nos tocamos y nos dejamos de tocar. De un día para otro dejamos de mirar y a otros les estallaron la mirada. De un día para otro todo se volvió escucha mientras los antiguos héroes enmudecían.
De pronto un día nos encontramos
desparramando infectando inoculando contagiando diseminando contaminando dispersando esparciendo
volviendo todo teatro
convirtiendo en evidencia los efectos
un día de repente algo de esto sucedió
algo nos pasó

And suddenly one day the spectators turned into actors, the actors into actresses, the actresses into protagonists, the protagonists into stories, and the stories invaded the town squares.
Suddenly one day memory turned into bodies, ghosts into seeds, memories exploded, and time began to move.
Suddenly one day theatre left the auditorium, our eyes became ears, looking transformed into listening, and listening into touching. Suddenly we touched and we stopped touching. Overnight, we stopped gazing and others had their gazes exploded. Overnight, everything became listening while the old heroes fell silent.

Un escalofrío frío me recorre la espalda, tengo miedo (nunca he sentido miedo en el teatro, he sentido un miedo hipotético, nunca un miedo real). Para acceder a la sala, hay que pasar un túnel estrecho que desciende hacia una bóveda de tierra, la luz es opaca. Avanzo con todos mis sentidos alerta, solo escucho el ruido de mis pasos en la tierra mojada, un olor pastoso penetra mi nariz, no logro percibir el final del túnel, mis ojos aún no se acostumbran a la falta de luz. Me dijeron que tenía que venir abrigada, el vaho comienza a salir de boca y me hundo en el cuello del abrigo. Al fin veo una claridad: la bóveda es pequeña y somos apenas unas quince personas. Todos parecen expectantes y cautelosos, igual que yo.
Una mujer está sentada con los brazos en el regazo y los ojos apenas entreabiertos. Parece esperar a que hagamos silencio, su inmovilidad es absoluta. “En el teatro de la memoria, los fantasmas son convocados a contar sus relatos. Silencio.”
Mi estómago se estremece, me pregunto si habré hecho bien en venir. Poco a poco un espectro se hace visible entre nosotros. Me habían dicho que los espíritus que aparecían podían ser conocidos de los espectadores. Afortunadamente no es el caso.
Igualmente resulta impactante: el rostro perplejo del aparecido que vuelve de la muerte, las cuencas de sus ojos que despiertan otra vez en medio del horror de haber sido dañado por otro ser humano, su voz desapegada y monótona, cansada de repetir incansablemente su desdicha.
No hay sobresaltos, solo una suerte de incomprensión en nuestro afán por testimoniar nuevamente su aniquilación. “¿Para qué quieres atisbar este abismo oscuro de lo humano? ¿Por qué quieres abandonar la comodidad de tu ignorancia y sumergirte en este foso del que yo misma quisiera salir?” parece decir con todas las fibras del que fue su cuerpo.
Estoy frente a un teatro de los recuerdos, donde los cuerpos han desaparecido. Los únicos cuerpos son los de la audiencia, y el persistente silencio que nos invade, duele, y avergüenza. Aunque algunos escépticos allá afuera lo nieguen, aunque digan que es una intrincada estafa realizada con los más sofisticados efectos especiales, sé que los asesinatos de la dictadura existieron. El horror sucedió y seguirá repitiéndose en un eco cada noche aunque no queramos verlo.
A cold chill travels up my spine — I’m afraid (I have never felt scared in the theatre; I’ve felt hypothetical fear, never real fear). To enter the room, you have to go through a narrow tunnel that descends toward a cavern in the earth. The light is opaque. I advance with all my senses alert: I only hear the sound of my steps on wet dirt; a thick smell penetrates my nose; I can’t perceive the end of the tunnel for my eyes are still not accustomed to the lack of light. They told me I had to come wearing a coat; I can see my breath and I bury myself in the collar of my coat. Finally I see with clarity: the cavern is small and we are barely fifteen people. Everyone looks expectant and cautious, just like me.
A woman is seated with arms across her chest and her eyes barely half open. She seems to wait until we are silent; her immobility is absolute. “In the theatre of memory, the phantoms are gathered to tell their stories. Silence.”
My stomach rumbles. I ask myself if I did the right thing in coming. Bit by bit a specter becomes visible among us. They had told me that the spirits that would appear might be known by the spectators. Fortunately, this is not the case.
Yet the scene is still shocking. The perplexed face of the apparition who has returned from the dead, the eye sockets awakened again in the midst of the horror of having been hurt by another human being; the detached and monotonous voice, tired of incessantly repeating its misfortune.
Nobody is shocked. We only experience a kind of incomprehension in our eagerness to witness its death again.
It seems to say with all the fibers of its body: “Why do you want to observe this dark abyss of humanity? Why do you want to abandon the comfort of your ignorance and submerge yourself in this grave that I myself would like to leave?”
I am facing a theatre of memories, where the bodies have disappeared. The only bodies are those of the audience amidst the persistent silence that invades us, hurts us, and embarrasses us. Although some skeptics out there will deny it, although they will say it’s an intricate scam realized with the most sophisticated special effects, I know that the dictatorship’s assassinations existed. The horror happened and will continue to repeat itself in an echo each night although we don’t want to see it.
